Google is dramatically broadening the reach of its Android Earthquake Alerts System. According to recent reports, the early-warning safety feature now supports more than double the number of regions it previously covered, offering crucial alerts to millions more users.

The system utilizes the accelerometers built into Android smartphones to detect seismic waves. When multiple devices in an area register motion consistent with an earthquake, the network processes the crowdsourced data and issues rapid alerts to nearby residents before severe shaking arrives.

This expansion is especially vital for areas that lack expensive, dedicated ground seismograph networks, providing a free and accessible safety net powered directly by mobile software updates.
