Digital forensics company Cellebrite has announced LOKI, a newly developed boot ROM exploit aimed at Apple silicon. Cellebrite is widely known for developing mobile forensic software and hardware utilized by law enforcement and security researchers to gain access to locked mobile devices.
Boot ROM exploits target the earliest layer of code that runs when a processor powers on. Because this low-level code is permanently burned into the silicon during manufacturing, vulnerabilities discovered at this stage typically cannot be resolved through standard software updates, posing long-term security implications for impacted hardware.
While specific details regarding which Apple chip generations are vulnerable have not been fully outlined, the arrival of LOKI represents a notable development in mobile security and hardware extraction capabilities.
