Setting up network-wide ad blocking is a popular project for privacy-conscious users, but extending that protection to mobile devices outside the local network usually requires custom DNS routing or a dedicated VPN tunnel. A recent experience shared by XDA Developers highlights the process of taking a home-hosted ad blocker on the road.

The configuration successfully allowed smartphones to route traffic through the home filter while on cellular data and external Wi-Fi networks. This setup provides consistent protection against ads and web trackers without needing separate ad-blocking tools installed on individual devices.

Ironically, while the system functioned reliably away from home, the only place the setup failed was on the local home network itself. Such issues are common in self-hosted networking, where local DNS loopback, routing conflicts, or split-horizon configurations can disrupt connectivity once the device rejoins the host environment.
