Home Wi-Fi networks frequently suffer from wireless interference and slow speeds, especially in crowded areas. By default, many consumer routers avoid Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) channels on the 5GHz band to stay clear of frequencies reserved for radar, resulting in overcrowded standard channels.
Activating DFS allows your router to tap into a wider spectrum of underutilized channels. For connected devices such as Android smartphones, moving away from congested frequencies can dramatically reduce latency and improve connection stability and data throughput.
While DFS provides clearer airwaves, routers must continuously monitor for radar signals and will automatically shift channels if priority traffic is detected. Despite this occasional trade-off, enabling the feature can give your wireless network valuable breathing room.
